As part of our IB MYP course all students need to participate in Community & Service during their time in Year 6 & 7. Last year three students in Room 13 (with the help of the unstoppable Mrs Harrison!) fulfilled part of their commitment at a local nursing home. Millie, Rachael & Tori had a great time at the nursing home and found that spending time with some of the aged residents was actually quite a bit of fun. They also found that they set some pretty high standards when it came to playing some games!
This year we’ve been evenĀ luckier. Mrs H has negotiated with Sharron, one of the managers, to allow more of our students to do their Community & Service at the nursing home. So many of the students volunteered that we ran out of places, and we’re booked up until late July! However, Sharron has agreed that more can go next semester too.
The students attend the nursing home for 3 hours on 3 alternate Saturdays and do a variety of things there. Their favourite things seem to be playing Scrabble & bingo
, although it would appear that the residents are giving them a run for their money! Millie, Rachael & Tori started their sessions yesterday and I believe that they, once again, had a great time. I’m looking forward to learning more tomorrow.
I am very proud of these students who are giving up their time to try to make a difference in someone else’s life. I think that they will certainly do that, but they will also make a difference in their own lives too!!
