Dance as Fitness

Our class often includes dance as part of our fitness sessions. This term we considered several songs for our dance choreography included all students.

  • We started with 5 groups of 5 or 6 students.
  • We listened to the track.
  • All groups worked collaboratively to come up with a routine that we could perform at assembly.
  • Each group performed for the other groups and the whole class voted on which parts of their routine we should use for our whole class choreography.
  • Groups then reassembled to put all of the chosen moves together to come up with a complete routine.
  • Each group again performed their creation for the rest of the class
  • Everyone voted for which choreography routine we should all learn to perform at assembly.
I was so impressed with the collaboration and cooperation that went on during these lessons. I heard some great discussions about the routine and students encouraging and supporting others. The process allowed for everyone to have been involved and have a say in the final production.  All groups did very well with their routines.
The next step was for the group with the chosen routine to teach the rest of the class. We made a start on this last Friday and made good progress for such a short amount of time. After a couple of tries each group performed for the rest of us, along with the original group. This lucky bunch were lucky enough to be the ones videoed whilst the others watched!
What do you think? How are we doing? Assembly is in 10 days so we’ll be practising this week with everybody.

Rocking & Rolling

Our school is planning a whole school Come Out event for next Friday where all classes are going to show a dance that they’ve learned. We may have been a bit ambitious (!) but we decided to learn to jive with Marilyn, our Finance Officer. I have been so impressed with the way everyone has got right into it – the enthusiasm has been awe inspiring. We have some great movers in our class! I’ve seen persistence, concentration, cooperation, collaboration and just plain fun going on in these sessions. I’m hoping we can get a decent video on the day to share here.

In the meantime, I’m wondering if we can master any of the moves in this video by the end of year concert? What do you think? ;-)
